A Begining

Jan 16th 2006

Hello all-

Well, a bit of a milestone occurred today up in the Park City mountains. Kelly for the first time since the leg break met face to face with the very tree that got in her way almost two years ago. Until today areas that even remotely reminded her of the big bad day were avoided at all costs.

The day started relatively benign not realizing the brevity that was going to unfold later in the day. All (most) of our chores were done, it was a beautiful bluebird morning, we were fueled by Starbucks and were very thankful for a three day weekend together. We started the ski day on McConkey’s chair in hopes of finding some leftover powder along the fringes of the runs and realized on the way up that the “Peak” was open. Careful consideration was in need because if we were to hike the peak it would promise a visit to the unfortunate scene of Kelly’s least favorite tree. Fortunately, over this past summer Park City had cut a road into the forest that, had it been there two years ago the probability that Kelly would have had troubles would have been highly improbable.

Not only did Kelly visit the tree, she rode past it three times without complications, just some photos… By the end of the day Kelly hiked to the Peak for the first time ever, rode Jupiter Chair for the first time since the break, hiked to Pinecone Ridge for the first time ever (the hardest hike at PC) and rode her board NEAR trees. All of these are a measure of an immense amount of courage and a return/improvement to Kelly’s old self.

If the day Kelly broke her leg represents how vulnerable and fragile we are, today Kelly showed me the courage that can come from such an incident.

Take care, Don
